You heard it right! We are talking about your pets' ecological footprint, or "paw print".

Did you know that even your pet can have an impact on the environment? It's true! A single dog can have a bigger ecological footprint than an SUV. And cats are not much better. According to research, it takes roughly 11,000 square meters of land to generate the chicken and grain that a large dog eats for its food. A Toyota Land Cruiser, having been driven 10,000 kilometers in one year, would only use 4,100 square meters of land. That is less than half the amount used by a dog.

Not only do pets affect our land usage, utilization of fossil fuels to harvest and process the chicken and grains, and other food supply to feed the animals, but they also affect other habitats and animals. For example, a certain cat excrement can contain the disease known as Toxoplasma gondii, which is being blamed for killing sea otters. But overall, the main "paw print" left behind by your pet comes from the consumption and carbon footprint of meat.

So what can you do about it? Try feeding Rover some eco-friendly food, and share this information with your friends. After all, knowledge is the most powerful tool we have.
